Failure analysis of end face seal of floating side plate of gear pump

When the gear pump is in operation, the high-pressure oil in the pressure oil chamber is led to the outer end surface of the side plate through the oil hole, and acts in the closed oil chamber formed by the ear-type seal ring and the compensation force groove to generate the compensation force. The combined force of the two acting on the inner end face of the side plate to form a reverse thrust force presses the side plate toward the gear end face, ensuring that the side plate can be automatically pressed against the gear end face under various working pressures.
The gear pump adopts an automatic compensation structure for axial clearance. The main manifestation of end face seal failure is severe wear of the floating side plate, the gap between the side plate and the gear end surface increases, and the volumetric efficiency of the gear pump decreases. The sealing performance of the side plate end faces depends on the following two points: 1. The compression ratio of the floating side plate; 2. The tilting moment of the floating side plate.
By analyzing the wear of the floating pump side plate of the gear pump, it is concluded that the overturning moment of the side plate is the key factor that causes the local compression ratio of the side plate to exceed the allowable value of the material, and then causes the local plate to be seriously worn. The end face seal is invalid. In order to improve the end face seal performance of the floating side plate, the side plate structure should be designed asymmetrically to reduce the overturning moment.
